Environ Hydrating Oil Capsules

The Skin Barrier

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin’s surface (stratum corneum), and it consists of cells and lipids (fats). It has a bricks and mortar structure. The bricks are the corneocytes (dried out, non-living skin cells that are ready to shed). The mortar (cement holding the bricks together) is the intercellular matrix, which is composed of lipids.

The Importance of the Lipid Barrier

The lipids in the ‘mortar’ are responsible for maintaining skin hydration, firmness, and softness. It is commonly referred to as the lipid barrier.

The lipid barrier minimizes water loss and is essential for strong, healthy, hydrated skin. It performs 3 important functions:

  • traps water molecules and prevents the passage of water out of the Stratum corneum
  • prevents Natural Moisturizing Factors from leaching out
  • prevents environmental chemicals and biological irritants from entering skin

After the age of 40, the amount of lipids decreases significantly. This is why we are more prone to dry skin as we age.

The lipid barrier is composed of 50% ceramides, 25% cholesterol, and 15% free fatty acids.

How to Maintain a Strong Barrier Function

It is important to maintain a strong Barrier Function for healthy skin. It is even more important if you have sensitive skin.

  • Avoid potential irritants and allergens
  • Avoid harsh cleansers
  • Avoid environmental conditions that cause sensitivity (such as high heat, dry air, bitter cold, strong wind)
  • Repair the lipid barrier with barrier repair ingredients that replace lipids that are lost.
  • Protect lipids from lipid oxidation by using sunscreen regularly and an antioxidant product (serum, moisturizer) in the daytime.

Environ® hydrating oil Capsules

These capsules are rich in ingredients to repair the skin barrier:

  • Sunflower seed oil and soybean oil: improve skin hydration by spurring the production of ceramides and cholesterol, two key components of the skin barrier.
  • Phytosterol is a plant sterol similar to cholesterol found in the skin barrier
  • Beta-sitosterol: A fatty acid-type ingredient derived from plants. Beta-sitosterol occurs naturally in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. It is similar to cholesterol, which occurs naturally in skin.
  • Vitamin C, Vitamin E and green tea: are antioxidants protecting from sun damage, pollution, and stress.

You should use the Environ oil capsules after your Environ moisturizer and before your sunscreen.

They are your best friend to preserve your skin barrier!
